Battery Cell Failure

On October, 1998 and August, 2000 battery bank #1 and Battery bank #2 reported cells failure.

Battery #1 27 Cells 4 Cells Failed

Battery # 2 27 Cells 2 Cells Failed

Root Cause of Failures , not known and most probable cause was fatigue and corrosion induced cell pressure vessel leakage.

On 26 February to 11 April 2001 and 30 August to 14 October 2001 a satellite eclipse period will take form by the earth in his normal translation movement that mind during eclipse, the solar pannel doesn't works and these battery banks must support all satellite loads.

Statement Of Problem

Service at 307ºE could be impaired during eclipse period if additional Battery #1 cells on 706 fails.

Full traffic can be supported if no additional cell failure occurs.

All Loads can be supported During Eclipse.

No interruption of services unless there is an additional cell failure during the next eclipse.

INTELSAT INITIAL ECLIPSE CONTINGENCY PLAN

Reassign services where feasible to vacate transponders for turn off.

5 Transponders maximum turn off. 8x 36 MHz units affected.

Reconfigure spacecraft units from battery 1 to battery 2. Battery 1 load reduced to 12 transponders.

Offer spare space segment in other satellites for reconfigurin services.

Redeployment of satellites if necessary.

ENTEL CONTINGENCY PLANS FOR ASSURING SERVICES

In the event could occur a greater problem not anticipated and as consequence a service interruption, ENTEL has prepared a contingency plans:

Making some new assignments for the services in differents transponders.

Using sapce segment in other satellites.

ENTEL has prepared specials procedures for changing the most of services as posible if this contingeny were presented in order to minimize the time out of service.

Our customer will be informed as soon as possible by ENTEL.
